Goodnight Porgy - An Encore to a life in music

A musical vision fifty-years in the making bursts like LED-lights, or perhaps it rests like the three empty-mic stands; the condenser microphone center-stage for an Austrian jazz singer - Lia Pale - who, for a decade, has wandered like Schubert’s stranger across European borders and stages with the man of the hour: mathias rüegg, an arranger who turns seventy on this cold December night in Vienna and says goodnight to the Porgy and Bess Jazz Club. His final album, The Blue Piano, will be brought to life for a crowd of intimates, first-timers, and even a few bartenders with big dreams.

Es gibt Momente, in denen man um sich schaut und sich nicht genau erklären kann, wie man an diesem Punkt gelandet ist. Manchmal ändern sich Dinge so schnell, dass man das Gefühl hat, man befände sich in einer Lawine von Veränderungen; unaufhaltsam. Ein Neuanfang bringt immer auch ein Ende mit sich und in solchen Momenten des Wandels ist die größte Herausforderung weiterzumachen ohne zu zweifeln; an sich selbst, dem Leben, der Vergangenheit und Zukunft; Innehalten und durchatmen um in der Stille des Hier und Jetzt wieder Kraft zu finden; während eines Spaziergangs durch den Schnee oder eines Abendessens mit jemandem, der an einen glaubt oder beim Hören eines So
ngs, der sich wie ein zu Hause anfühlt. Kleine Dinge werden in solchen Momenten groß und beruhigen die Zweifel, helfen Vertrauen und Kraft zu finden um weiterzumachen, weiterzuspielen - no complaints and no regrets. I still believe in chasing dreams and placing bets.
Dieses Jahr verschicke ich zwei Holiday-Specials, die mir sehr am Herzen liegen: ein Lied und eine Geschichte.
Der Song ist eine Live-Version einer meiner absoluten Lieblingsballaden: Here’s to Life, aufgenommen als Überraschungs-Zugabe am 8.12 im Porgy & Bess mit Georg Vogel am Klavier, Ingrid Oberkanins an der Perkussion und Hans Strasser am Bass.
Die Geschichte beschreibt, was davor, also bis zum Moment der Zugabe im Porgy, so vor sich ging. Quasi ein „concert essay“ geschrieben von einem lieben Freund und wunderbaren Autor Zach Ring, der diesen Essay ganz in der Tradition der Liner Notes, die auf den Rückseiten meiner Lieblingsalben von Sinatra zu finden sind, geschrieben hat.

There are moments where you look around and find yourself at a crossroads. In these moments, it becomes impossible to tell how you got wherever it is you are. Sometimes things change so fast that it feels like an avalanche: unstoppable. When that happens, there’s nothing left to do but let go and give in. A new beginning always entails an ending; in times of change, the greatest challenge is sometimes seeing through self-doubt, or to persist without doubting what’s come to pass. All one can do when met with such avalanches is hold still, take a deep breath, and find strength in the stillness of the here and now. That stillness can shine through like the sun on a foggy day, or it might be found during dinner with a loving friend or heard in a song that feels like home. Little things become big in such moments; these little things quiet the doubts, help to build trust, and lead us as we gather enough strength to move forward and play with no complaints and no regrets. Only then do we still believe in chasing dreams and placing bets.
This year I’m sending out two Holiday-Specials that are very dear to my heart: a song and a story. The song is a live version of one my all time favorite ballads: Here’s to Life. This song was performed as a surprise encore at Porgy & Bess to cap off mathias’ birthday concert. Georg Vogel is on piano, Ingrid Oberkanins on percussion, and Hans Strasser is on bass.
The story is what happened before the live version, written by a dear friend – and wonderful writer – Zach Ring, who has written an essay on the concert in the tradition of liner notes found on the backs of my favorite Sinatra albums.
