Last Hope

- Letzte Hoffnung

Here and there up on the trees
You’ll maybe see a coloured leaf,
And I stand quite lost in thoughts
Many a time before the trees.

I observe a single leaf,
And I stake my hopes on it;
If the wind plays with my leaf now,
I would tremble with fear.

​

If the leaf falls on the ground,
Hope falls down with it as well;
If I too fall on the ground,
Cry as I lost my last hope.

Hie und da ist an den Bäumen
Manches bunte Blatt zu seh'n,
Und ich bleibe vor den Bäumen
Oftmals in Gedanken steh'n.

Schaue nach dem einen Blatte,
Hänge meine Hoffnung dran;
Spielt der Wind mit meinem Blatte,
Zittr' ich, was ich zittern kann.

​

Ach, und fällt das Blatt zu Boden,
Fällt mit ihm die Hoffnung ab;
Fall' ich selber mit zu Boden,
Wein' auf meiner Hoffnung Grab.
